As we tumble through our busy lives, tied to schedules, eyes glued to screens, ears always full of information or noise; it’s easy to wonder why we bother. “Is that all there is?” as Peggy Lee sings.
What are we here for if all we do is run from one place to the next and then we die? Hm. There must be more to it.
Although the hippies demonstrated it in the 60s and the New Age people preached it there after, we still haven’t picked up the message. We live on the Earth yet we have little connection to it. We put rubber soles on our feet or even platform heels and lie on rubber yoga mats which all cut off the electrical connection to the ground. We pave the surface with roads and pathways to further disconnect and spend all our time in buildings. We forget to listen to the wind, the birds, forget to notice dew on the plants in the morning, forget to literally smell the roses, see the colour of the sky, the grass and the leaves changing with the seasons.
You might make some temporary connections by going out for a run or a walk but, if you spend the whole time thinking, then you miss the whole show. What if you walk with a friend and you talk the whole way? Missed it again. Stay on the pathway in your running shoes, you make no sole/soul connection.
The earth is made up of constantly flowing electro magnetic currents. So is the human body and the flowing currents are an integral part of keeping ourselves healthy. The Chinese speak of them as Meridian pathways. Scientists have other names for them, yet rarely will a Western GP doctor address them when making their medical diagnosis.
The earth can stimulate all your senses if you are mindful. Learning to appreciate what you experience adds positive emotion which raises your frequency, boosts your immunity and well being. The frequency radiates out from you 20-25 feet in radius – that’s a big area. Then it’s not just a trip for the fresh air. It can be inspiration for a new idea, a new way to solve a problem or a grateful respite for the analytical side of your brain which is bombarded with media and conversation from dawn till dusk.
If you have to go quite a distance away from home to experience nature then you have to question the quality of the air you are breathing from day to day. Oxygen is produced by plants, not concrete and steel. How many plants are there to combat the carbon monoxide and dioxide expelled by humans and cars around where you spend most of your hours? And again, I come back to the same question, what’s the point of accumulating money / assets if you die early or are frequently sick because you made your health and wellbeing a low priority?
Two January’s back my father died of Liver Cancer. Although many have said it before, it was really the first time I deeply thought about the saying “you can’t take it with you”. Truly. You can’t cash it all in and take a wallet to heaven. No matter what assets or wealth you build over a lifetime, in the end, you throw all your cards on the table and walk away. It was just a game, after all.
Sure, it gives you more options as to how you spend your time but I see more and more people recognising the emptiness of it. It’s particularly tragic to see those who have thrown so much time and energy into building their empire only to find there’s no one to share it with because they didn’t take the time to foster deep relationships with friends and family. Even married couples can lose track of each other and drift apart lost in a tangle of new clothes and investment properties.
I’m not saying you need to give it all up. Balance is the key. How is your work life balance?
Sustainability – Food for Thought
There have been a couple of reminders that have popped up for me lately around adding more nature to neighbourhoods. The first was the interview I did with Mary Clear from the Incredible Edible Project a few years back which I find myself referring people to…
Here’s their website https://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/index.php
Mary’s message was just like her surname:
- Start now
- Get your neighbours involved – it’s a great way to meet them
- Don’t wait for the red tape to be cut for you
- Use every space
- Promote it to schools – children learn fast!
- Getting the teenagers involved reduces petty crime
I noticed even in my local paper, people are starting to do this and create beautiful spaces wherever they can.
I’ve learnt there’s an American term for doing this. Guerrilla Gardening…

Sometimes it’s about food for the locals, other times it’s simply about making a beautiful space that generates oxygen, nice smells and a pleasant place to inhabit.
Earth Consciousness and Russian Homestead living
The next was an incredible book series lent to me called the Ringing Cedar series. I’m on to the second book now in a series of nine.
Translated from Russian, you can take it as fiction or non-fiction as you please. They are written by business man, Vladimir Megre, about his experience in the Siberian forest where he meets a most extraordinary, advanced human. She teaches him how to truly connect back with nature, old style family values, how everything has consciousness and how to create a new life which keeps you healthy and vital. She also talks about the new generation of children born with exceptional skills that eclipse our own – very much like Mercredan mentioned here. It’s almost like the X-Men movie series was preparing us for these children.
Here’s Megre’s website http://vmegre.com/en/
I HIGHLY recommend these books, they are truly extraordinary.
Big thing to note: please support Megre by buying the green cover books. I understand there was a publisher in the USA who signed him up to exclusive rights to publish in the states (with book covers that are black) which somehow allows them now to print without paying Megre a cent. This is disgraceful, in my eyes, karma will be swift. So, buy the green cover books directly from his website.
It’s hard to know where to start with telling you about them. They cover so many areas of life, how we think about things, how we relate to things and to each other.
One very small example was the idea that plants and animals are there for us, there to support us. I started going out to the grass verge on my suburban street as I have no lawn on my inner city property. I spent about 10 minutes each day in bare feet strolling, standing or sitting in the grass. At first this made my feet mildly itchy each time which might have put me off but I kept going and soon my feet grew accustomed to being there. Energetically I could feel something reach through the soles of my feet and down into the earth – such a lovely feeling! Literally grounded.
I thought I’d make friends with the ants who, in the first Ringing Cedar book (titled Anastasia) would bite the author to release toxins from his body. As I sat on my narrow grass verge – maybe a metre wide – (my neighbours laugh saying this is me out in my “field”) I turned my attention to the ants and let them bite my feet. Sometimes it hurt and sometimes I couldn’t feel it at all. They seemed to know how long to stay and as they left I would thank each one. No mark was left afterwards.
One time I was on the concrete balcony out front of my house sitting near where there was a mini-highway of ants. I allowed them onto my feet. Once they realised I wasn’t going to swipe them, they all piled on. I could see them with their bottoms wiggling in the air biting as hard as they could around my toes but I couldn’t feel them at all – very odd. They did this for a fair amount of time until I got bored. I turned my attention to them and said “OK, guys that’s it. I’m going inside now” and, to my surprise, they all up and left! Seriously? Did they get the message? Hmmm….
I noticed some grass had started growing between the pavers in the back part of my property so, instead of weeding, I allowed it to grow to full height which was about 60cm (2 feet) high. I loved it! I realised there is nowhere in my neighbourhood where grass is allowed to grow to its full height. We continually cut it back – as if man could ever control nature. Ha! I found myself sitting amongst it. My cat joined me and we sat together contemplating the world. On really hot days I noticed it was much cooler in this area than before. The pavers used to reflect heat up to my kitchen window so, the long grass made the inside of the house cooler too. New butterflies, moths and other insects were enjoying the grass. Some little paper wasps arrived and the caterpillars disappeared, no longer eating the leaves – I’m guessing the wasps were planting their larvae in them so I no longer needed to use pesticide spray.
It was fascinating and also amazing how quickly Mother Nature can take over if you allow her.
Finding your place in the world
Since I started along this “awakening”, I do find I connect more with insects, plants, grass and trees now. It really does make me feel like I belong – this is a feeling so many people are missing. The feelings of separation, isolation or being the odd one out can all diminish when you feel like you’re a part of the natural world. Connected and in two way communication. So simple!
I thought I’d make some sharable memes which I’ll upload to my social networks. Feel free to copy them and share them yourself. My idea with these is to encourage a simple idea that doesn’t take a lot of work. Not sure if many will be prepared to give up barista made coffee – I couldn’t think of anything else off the top of my head where so many people blow a lot of money in a week. And all those non-recyclable cups – gulp.
You can send me more ideas for these or make some yourself and I’d be happy to share them. Let’s get people thinking – the time is ripe for change. The shift is now 80% complete – so Mercredan reports – so everyone is ready to take action and make a new kind of world.
Let’s do this already!!!
